What is Year of Return 2019?

The “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” is a major landmark marketing campaign targeting the African – American and Diaspora Market to mark 400 years of the first enslaved African arriving in Jamestown Virginia.

The year long event was launched in In Washington, D.C., in September 2018, by Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo who declared and formally launched the “Year of Return, Ghana 2019” for Africans in the Diaspora. The aim of “Year of Return is to unite Africans on the continent with their brothers and sisters in the diaspora. The arrival of enslaved Africans marked a sordid and sad period in African history, when people were forcefully taken away from Africa into years of deprivation, humiliation and torture. While August 2019 marks 400 years since enslaved Africans arrived in the United States, “The Year of Return, Ghana 2019” celebrates the cumulative resilience of all the victims of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade who were scattered and displaced through the world in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia

“We know of the extraordinary achievements and contributions they [Africans in the diaspora] made to the lives of the Americans, and it is important that this symbolic year—400 years later—we commemorate their existence and their sacrifices.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo

For the Year of Return there has and will be a host of one off events and celebrations all over Ghana with Accra being the focal point for the start of the journey of African brothers and sister in the diaspora.
