Ghana’s coast offers some of the most diverse and interesting shorelines in all of West Africa. This isn’t just about sand and sea; it’s about finding that perfect spot where the ocean, a river, and a relaxed atmosphere all meet.
Take Ada Foah, for example. This is where the mighty Atlantic Ocean gives the Volta River a high-five! Itās an amazing spot well-known for its towering palm-lined beaches, lovely clean sand, and some truly exclusive resorts. Itās time to push past the usual spots and see what gems are waiting for you along our coast!
Does Accra have any good beaches and beach resorts?
Absolutely! If you’re staying in the capital, the Greater Accra region has a few favourites: Labadi Beach, Laboma, Coco Beach, Sakumono, Kokrobite, and Bojo.
Which is best really depends on what you’re in the mood for:
For the Buzz: Labadi Beach is the most popular and easiest to get to. It’s lively and a great place to people-watch.
For Quiet Time: We always point locals and visitors toward Kokrobite and Bojo. These spots offer a calmer, less crowded vibeāperfect for a real chill-out day.
Local Tip: Beach Guide! Most city beaches are free, which sadly means they can sometimes be messy. However, the quieter spots managed by resorts, like Bojo, usually charge a small fee to get onto the sand. Trust us, itās worth it! That small charge keeps those beaches exceptionally clean.
Can you swim in the sea in Ghana and what is it like?
Yes, you can absolutely swim! Most of our beaches face the powerful Atlantic Ocean. Now, if you know your oceans, you know this water isn’t exactly tropical bathwaterāit’s wonderfully refreshing!
A Quick Safety Word: The Gulf of Guinea has strong rip currents, so always pay attention to the tide signs and lifeguard flags. The Atlantic can be a little moody! But with that blazing Ghanaian sun on your back, a dip in the ocean is the perfect way to cool down.
Where are the best beaches and beach resorts located in Ghana?
Ghana’s coastline is hugeāaround 372 miles (600 KM) long! That gives us about 173 miles (280 KM) of pure sandy beach stretching from Denu (near Keta beach) all the way to Half Assini in the west.
We’ve gone ahead and picked what we think are the 10 must-visit beaches and beach resorts along this coast. If you love soaking up the sun, having a great “gist” (a chat!) with friends, and truly relaxing, you need to check these places out!
