Accra is a vibrant and energetic city—and getting around is part of the experience! Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning home, understanding how to navigate the capital is key to enjoying all that it has to offer. From the trusty TroTro to modern ride-hailing apps, here’s your guide to transportation in Accra.
TroTro – The Heart of Local Travel
The TroTro is the most widely used and affordable mode of transport in Accra. These shared minibuses run set routes, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way. A typical short journey costs as little as ₵1, while longer trips, such as from Accra to Tema, may range between ₵7 to ₵10, depending on distance and traffic.
Top Tip: Always carry cash, as TroTros don’t accept mobile money or cards. The best seat? By the window—you’ll catch the breeze and the best views of the city.
Taxis – Flexible and Negotiable
Traditional taxis are still a popular way to move around, especially if you prefer a more private ride. Fares aren’t fixed, so be prepared to negotiate with the driver before the journey begins.
For example, a trip from Madina to Adenta might start at a higher quote but can be bargained down to ₵10. Taxis are easy to find at stations or along busy roadsides.
Ride-Hailing Apps – Uber & Bolt
Apps like Uber and Bolt have grown in popularity in Accra, especially among younger commuters and visitors. They offer the convenience of upfront pricing, GPS tracking, and mobile payments. While slightly more expensive than a TroTro or a negotiated taxi fare, they provide comfort and reliability.
Good to know: In areas with patchy internet or during peak times, you might find traditional taxis more readily available. Find out more about the ride hailing options in Ghana especially Accra and Kumasi
Okada – Motorbike Taxis for the Brave
If you’re in a rush or looking for a little adventure, Okadas (motorbike taxis) offer a fast, agile way to get around traffic. They’re not for everyone—but for short distances, they can be a game-changer.
Safety First: Always wear a helmet (provided by the rider), and be aware that not all areas legally support Okada operations.
Tricycles (“Yellow Yellow”) – Mostly in the North
While not common in Accra, in places like Tamale you’ll come across tricycles known locally as “yellow yellow”. They’re used similarly to TroTros or taxis and are great for short distances. If you’re travelling beyond Accra, keep an eye out for them!
Prefer to Walk?
In walkable parts of Accra—especially markets, beachfronts, or within neighbourhoods—many people enjoy exploring on foot. Just remember the sun can be intense, so always carry water and wear sun protection. Whether you’re zipping across town in a TroTro, enjoying the breeze on an Okada, or cruising in an Uber, Accra offers a transport mode for every budget and style. Each option gives you a different view of the city and a chance to interact with locals in unique ways.
