What does the African Futures Institute do?

The African Futures Institutes (AFI) ambition is to be a world-class teaching and research institute, located in
Accra, Ghana. Its mission is to transform contemporary architectural education by uniting teaching, research and
practice in an innovative, critical and globally relevant way.

Recognising Africa s unique position as a young, dynamic and rapidly changing continent, Professor Lesley Lokko, former director and founder of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg and the former dean of the Bernard & Anne Spitzer School of Architecture, The City College of New York, has joined forces with Sir David Adjaye, OBE, to plan and develop this ambitious initiative.

How did the African Futures Institute start?

It all began with a series of what if questions: what if a new school of architecture suddenly emerged from a new and unexpected place? / what if Africa and the African Diaspora held the key to overcoming so many contemporary challenges of race, environmental justice, new forms of urbanism? / what if a new African school could teach the global North how to embed diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart of built environment pedagogy? / what if a constellation of progressive global voices could find the space and freedom to pursue a truly transformative agenda? / what if a new and progressive school could produce a generation of truly innovative African and Diaspora architects.

What to see and do at the African Futures Institute

The African Futures Institute holds a number of events throughout the year, which are either exhibitions or talks from visionaries and and artists from around the world. Check out our events section for upcoming events.
