Best eSIMs for Ghana in 2026: Local vs Travel eSIM Prices Compared

If you’re travelling to Ghana, an eSIM is probably one of the easiest ways to get your phone connected without worrying about expensive international roaming. But there is an important question most eSIM comparison guides don’t really address: Should you buy a travel eSIM before you leave home — or get an eSIM directly from a Ghanaian mobile network? Travel eSIM providers such as Vodafone Travel, Airalo, Revolut, Saily and Holafly make things incredibly convenient. You can buy your data before travelling, install the eSIM at home and potentially be online as soon as you land at Kotoka International Airport. But that convenience can cost more. Ghanaian networks including MTN and AT also offer eSIMs, giving you access to local data prices and, importantly, a Ghanaian phone number. So which option is actually best? We’ve compared some of the main eSIM options for Ghana, their current prices and who they’re best suited to. Prices checked: 11 August 2026.

Quick answer: which eSIM is best for Ghana?

There isn’t one eSIM that’s best for everybody. If you’re coming from the UK, US, Canada or Europe for a short holiday, a travel eSIM is usually the easiest option because you can arrange everything before you fly. If you’re staying for several weeks, returning to Ghana regularly or want a Ghanaian phone number, a local MTN or AT eSIM could offer significantly better value. And if you use a lot of data for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or remote working, an unlimited plan such as Holafly may be worth considering despite its higher price.

1. Vodafone Travel eSIM Ghana

Best current travel eSIM value

Vodafone’s Travel eSIM is one of the most interesting options we found when checking Ghana plans. At the time of our August 2026 update, Vodafone Travel was running a promotion offering:

The 6GB and 10GB allowances currently include Vodafone’s double-data promotion, while the plans are also discounted by 15%. That makes the 10GB offer particularly competitive at approximately €1.02 per GB. The service is data-only, can be installed digitally and is designed to activate when you reach your destination.

Good for:

• One or two-week holidays
• Visitors who want everything arranged before travelling
• Travellers who don’t need a Ghanaian number
• People wanting a relatively large amount of data without paying premium prices

Watch out for:

The current price includes a promotion. If the promotion ends, the value calculation changes, so check Vodafone Travel’s Ghana page before purchasing.

2. Revolut eSIM Ghana

Best for existing Revolut users

If you already use Revolut, its Ghana eSIM is one of the easiest options to consider because everything is managed from an app you may already have on your phone. Revolut currently advertises Ghana data from £1.50. Its Ghana packages include:

Revolut does not currently display all of those package prices publicly on its Ghana webpage — the full pricing is shown within the app. For that reason, we haven’t quoted prices we couldn’t independently verify. Revolut allows you to install the eSIM and then top up from within the app. You can also track your data consumption and use RevPoints towards eligible data purchases.

3. Airalo Ghana

Best-known specialist eSIM option

Airalo is one of the better-known international eSIM providers and has dedicated Ghana packages. Current Ghana plans start from approximately US$4.50 for 1GB. Airalo also offers larger data allowances for travellers staying longer or using more mobile data. One useful detail is that Airalo identifies AT Ghana (formerly AirtelTigo) as the local network behind its Ghana eSIM service. So although you’re buying your package from an international eSIM company, your phone is ultimately connecting to a Ghanaian mobile network.

Good for:

• US travellers
• International visitors already familiar with Airalo
• People who travel frequently and want to manage several destinations through one app
• Short and medium stays

Watch out for:

Compare the cost against buying an AT eSIM directly once you’re in Ghana. The travel eSIM buys you convenience. It doesn’t necessarily buy you cheaper data.

4. Saily Ghana

Best simple alternative

Saily offers prepaid Ghana eSIM packages starting from around US$6.99. Its Ghana plans currently range from 1GB to 5GB, with packages lasting either seven or 30 days. The service can be purchased before travelling and automatically activates when you arrive at your destination, provided the eSIM is enabled correctly. Saily also offers regional and global plans, which makes it worth considering if Ghana is only one stop on a larger trip. Another useful feature is hotspot support without a stated hotspot restriction on its Ghana plans.

Good for:

• US and international travellers
• People who want a simple app-based setup
• Multi-country travellers
• Visitors who need to share their connection with another device

5. Holafly Ghana

Best for unlimited data

Holafly takes a different approach from most of the providers in this guide. Instead of selling you a fixed number of gigabytes, its Ghana eSIM offers unlimited data. Current published prices include:

Watch out for:

Unlimited data comes at a premium. If you only use your phone for WhatsApp, Bolt, Maps, emails and occasional social media, paying more than US$100 for a 30-day package probably doesn’t make sense.

6. AT Ghana eSIM

Best local value we’ve found

This is where the comparison gets interesting. AT Ghana offers eSIM directly to customers. At the time of our August 2026 check, AT was advertising special one-time introductory eSIM bundles:

Those prices demonstrate just how different local Ghana data pricing can be from international travel eSIM pricing. The 20GB introductory package costs GHS 50 and also includes local call minutes. By comparison, international providers may charge considerably more for 20GB. However, there’s a trade-off. AT currently directs customers to an AT customer-service shop for eSIM registration and activation. So this isn’t necessarily something a first-time visitor can conveniently set up from their sofa in London, New York or Toronto before flying.

• Repeat visitors
• People who need a Ghanaian number
• Visitors looking for local data prices
• People staying three or four weeks

Watch out for:

7. MTN Ghana eSIM

Best for frequent Ghana visitors

MTN Ghana also offers eSIM to prepaid and postpaid customers. Unlike an international travel eSIM, this gives you a proper MTN Ghana mobile connection and Ghanaian telephone number. MTN says the eSIM itself is free for MTN users. Onboarding is digital through the myMTN app, and compatible phones can be checked by dialling: *#06# If an EID number appears, the device supports eSIM. Once connected to MTN, you buy Ghanaian data bundles rather than an international travel eSIM allowance. That can make this particularly attractive for people who visit Ghana regularly.

• Ghanaian diaspora
• Frequent visitors
• Longer stays
• People who want a Ghanaian number
• Visitors who want access to normal MTN services and local data

Watch out for:

Don’t confuse MTN Ghana eSIM with MTN Travel eSIM. They are different products. For somebody travelling to Ghana, we’re talking here about getting a local MTN Ghana eSIM.

What about Telecel Ghana eSIM?

Telecel Ghana is another network worth considering. However, when we updated this guide, we couldn’t find sufficiently clear current official information about Telecel’s eSIM onboarding process and visitor requirements. Rather than tell you to follow potentially outdated instructions, we’d recommend checking directly with Telecel before travelling or visiting an official Telecel shop after arriving in Ghana. We’ll update this guide when we can verify the current process.

Travel eSIM vs Ghana eSIM: what’s the real difference?

This is probably the most important part of the comparison.

Travel eSIM

You are paying for convenience. You can usually:

• Buy it before travelling
• Install it at home
• Keep your normal SIM
• Connect when you land
• Avoid visiting a phone shop
• Pay in pounds, dollars or euros

But you generally don’t receive normal Ghanaian mobile pricing.

Local Ghana eSIM

You’re becoming a customer of a Ghanaian mobile network. That can give you:

• Ghanaian data prices
• A Ghanaian telephone number
• Local calls
• Access to normal network bundles
• Better value for longer stays

But registration may require more effort after arrival.

Which should you choose?

Coming from the US for seven days?

A travel eSIM is probably easiest. Airalo, Saily or Vodafone Travel lets you sort out your data before leaving the US. For a one-week holiday, convenience may be worth paying a little more.

Coming from the UK for two weeks?

Compare carefully. Vodafone Travel’s current promotional pricing is extremely competitive, so there’s little financial reason to spend your first day in Accra searching for a phone shop purely to save a small amount. If you’re staying longer, a local Ghana eSIM becomes more attractive.

Coming from Canada or Europe?

The same principle applies. For a short holiday, look at travel eSIM pricing first. For longer stays, compare that with MTN and AT once you’re in Ghana.

Coming for December in Ghana?

If you’re spending three or four weeks in Ghana over December, we’d seriously consider a local eSIM. You’ll probably use considerably more data than somebody on a short sightseeing trip — especially with Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp, ride-hailing and nights out. A Ghanaian number can also become genuinely useful during a longer stay.

Working remotely from Ghana?

Consider having two connections. For example: Primary: MTN Ghana eSIM Backup: travel eSIM or another Ghanaian network Mobile performance can vary by location, so having a backup is useful if you rely on your connection for work.

Travelling around Africa?

Don’t automatically buy a Ghana-only eSIM. Several travel eSIM providers offer regional African packages. If your itinerary is something like: London → Accra → Abidjan → Dakar → London a regional African eSIM could be more convenient than purchasing a separate plan in each country. Always check exactly which countries are included.

Is a local Ghana eSIM actually cheaper?

Potentially, yes — significantly. AT’s introductory 20GB/30-day eSIM offer at GHS 50 demonstrates the difference between local and international pricing. But price isn’t everything. Suppose your international eSIM costs $15 and works immediately when your plane lands. You don’t have to find a shop. You don’t have to register. You don’t have to change numbers. You don’t spend part of your first morning sorting out your phone. For a seven-day holiday, paying a little extra for that convenience can make perfect sense. For a six-week stay, paying international travel-eSIM prices throughout the trip makes much less sense when local options are available.

How much data do you actually need in Ghana?

Light user — 1GB to 3GB

Probably enough for:

• WhatsApp messaging
• Bolt and Yango
• Google Maps
• Emails
• Light web browsing

Use hotel Wi-Fi for video and large downloads.

Average holiday user — 5GB to 10GB

Better if you’re also using:

• Instagram
• Facebook
• Regular photo uploads
• Some video
• Music streaming

For most one or two-week visitors, this is probably the sweet spot.

Heavy user — 20GB+

Consider this if you’re:

• Uploading lots of video
• Using TikTok heavily
• Streaming regularly
• Tethering a laptop
• Working remotely
• Spending three or four weeks in Ghana

At this point, local Ghana data or an unlimited travel package becomes much more interesting.

Can you keep your US, UK or Canadian number?

Yes, on compatible dual-SIM phones. You could have: Home SIM: your normal number for calls, messages and verification codes. eSIM: Ghana mobile data. Just make absolutely sure your phone isn’t quietly using expensive international data roaming on your home SIM. Set your Ghana/travel eSIM as the mobile-data connection.

What does viewGhana recommend?

For a short Ghana holiday, buy a travel eSIM before you fly. At the moment, Vodafone Travel’s promotional Ghana packages look particularly competitive, while Airalo and Saily are established alternatives. Existing Revolut customers should check their in-app Ghana price before purchasing elsewhere. For heavy data users, Holafly’s unlimited package removes the worry about running out, but you’re paying considerably more for that freedom. For three or four-week stays, compare the international packages with AT and MTN Ghana. And for the Ghanaian diaspora or anyone who visits Ghana regularly, we’d seriously consider setting up a local Ghana eSIM rather than buying a fresh international travel eSIM every time you visit. That’s particularly true if having a Ghanaian telephone number is useful to you. The cheapest option isn’t necessarily the best. The question is: How much are you willing to pay for convenience?
