As of 23 February 2026, Ghana’s main international gateway has officially reverted to its original name: Accra International Airport (ACC).
If you’re searching for Kotoka International Airport, don’t worry you’re in the right place. The name may have changed, but the airport, location, and experience remain exactly the same.
A Brief Note on the Name Change
The airport was originally known as Accra International Airport before being renamed Kotoka International Airport in honour of Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka. Kotoka was one of the key figures behind Ghana’s first military coup on 24 February 1966, which brought an end to the First Republic.
Following public discourse and historical reassessment, the airport has now returned to its original name a change that reflects a broader national conversation around history, identity, and remembrance.
Welcome to Accra International Airport
Accra International Airport is more than just an entry point — it’s the emotional gateway to Ghana. There’s a particular buzz that comes with landing here, especially when spontaneous applause breaks out as the wheels touch the runway. As the seatbelt sign flicks off and the pilot calls, “Cabin crew, doors to manual,” you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. This is where the Ghana experience begins.
Arriving in Accra: Then and Now
Before September 2018, arriving at the airport (then known as Kotoka) meant walking down aircraft stairs straight onto the tarmac, instantly wrapped in Accra’s warm, humid air — a full sensory welcome to West Africa.
Today, Terminal 3 has transformed the arrival experience. Passengers now disembark via air bridges directly into a modern terminal with improved immigration, baggage handling, and facilities.
Yet some things never change.
After baggage claim, that final walk toward the exit still carries the same magic — the quiet hum of the hall giving way to laughter, shouts, embraces, and familiar faces waiting just beyond the doors. For first-timers it’s unforgettable. For returnees, it still hits home.
Pause for a second when you walk out.
You’re in Ghana. Akwaaba.
