Kaneshie Market sits along the Kaneshie–Odorkor road on the western side of Accra, right at the point where the city starts stretching toward the suburbs and beyond. Because it’s a major transport hub as well, the whole area is always buzzing with taxis, trotros, vendors, and shoppers moving in every direction.
Inside the market itself, it’s a full Ghanaian shopping experience you can find almost everything. Fresh produce, yams stacked like tiny mountains, spices, smoked fish, colourful kente cloth, ready-made clothes, footwear, cosmetics, household goods, small appliances… you name it, somebody is selling it. The lower levels tend to focus on food items, while the upper floors have more general goods and fabrics. The stalls spill into the surrounding streets too, so the market feels like it flows outwards in every direction.
What Kaneshie is especially good for is bulk shopping and local essentials. If you’re stocking up your kitchen, buying provisions, or looking for traditional ingredients, it’s perfect. It’s also great for fabrics and sewn items lots of tailors work nearby. Compared to Makola, Kaneshie feels a bit more organised but still very much a proper Ghanaian market vibe: busy, layered, lively, and always full of energy.
Since the name “Kaneshie” comes from “under the lamp,” people love the idea that it grew from a night-time trading spot into this huge commercial centre. It still carries that sense of history even though the main building came up in the 1970s.
And yes — be ready to spend your cedis because there’s always something that catches your eye! If you’ve got a video showing an afternoon there, that ties in perfectly with the atmosphere and pace of the place.
