The Akosombo Dam
The Akosombo Dam, also known as the Volta Dam, is one of Ghana’s most important engineering achievements and a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the country’s history, infrastructure and natural beauty. Located in the spectacular Akosombo Gorge in Ghana’s Eastern Region, the dam spans the Volta River and is operated by the Volta River Authority (VRA).
Completed in 1965 under the vision of Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the dam formed Lake Volta, the world’s largest man-made lake by surface area. The project transformed Ghana’s economy by providing reliable hydroelectric power for industry, homes and businesses, while also creating an important inland waterway linking communities across the country.
Today, the Akosombo Dam continues to generate electricity for Ghana and also exports power to neighbouring West African countries, including Togo and Benin, making it one of the region’s most strategically important energy assets.
Visitors have several ways to experience the dam. You can admire the impressive structure from the public viewing areas, enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on the Volta River or Lake Volta, or book a guided tour to learn how the hydroelectric plant operates.
Visiting the Akosombo Dam
There are several ways to experience the dam depending on the type of visit you are looking for.
Public Viewing Areas
Visitors can access the public viewing points to take photographs and enjoy panoramic views of the dam, the Volta River and the surrounding landscape.
Guided Dam Tours
The Volta River Authority (VRA) conducts guided tours of the dam, typically between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. These tours provide an insight into the history, construction and operation of one of Africa’s most significant hydroelectric projects.
VRA Visitor Centre
The VRA Visitor Centre is generally open to visitors, including Sundays from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, where you can learn more about the history of the project through displays and visitor information.
Touring the Power Station
Visitors wishing to enter the operational areas inside the hydroelectric power station must obtain advance approval. A minimum of 10 working days’ notice is normally required to allow executive security clearance.
Entry Fees
If you are visiting independently, tickets should be purchased at the VRA Visitor Centre in Akosombo Township before proceeding to the dam, as they are not sold at the security gates.
Typical admission prices are:
- Ghanaian Adults: GHS 30–50
- Ghanaian Students: GHS 15–20
- International Visitors: USD $10–20 (approximately GHS 150–300)
Boat cruises on the Volta River, guided excursions and organised day tours are priced separately and may include transport, meals and visits to nearby attractions.
