Ghana SIM Cards & eSIMs for Tourists: How to Stay Connected in 2026

by Nana Asante Igdam
August 11, 2026
0 Comments

Arriving in Ghana without mobile data is an avoidable inconvenience.

Staying connected makes travel much easier — for WhatsApp, Google Maps, Bolt or Yango, checking places, contacting accommodation, and sharing your trip.

Good to know: According to Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA), SIM registration rules are being updated for 2026. Current official guidance confirms visitors can register using a passport and proof of entry, not a Ghana Card. Always check the latest NCA or network updates before travelling, as procedures may still evolve.  Find out more about Sim registration rules and process with the Ghana card

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s the easiest way to get mobile data in Ghana?

There are three main options:

OptionBest forGhana number?Before travel?
Local Ghana SIMLonger stays, repeat visitorsYesNo
Local Ghana eSIMLonger stays, eSIM phonesYesSometimes
International travel eSIMShort trips, instant connectivityUsually noYes

For most short visits, a travel eSIM is the simplest — install before you fly and connect on arrival.

For longer stays or regular visits, a local SIM or eSIM is better, especially if you need a Ghanaian number.

Can tourists buy a SIM card in Ghana?

Yes.

Official NCA guidance confirms tourists can register SIMs using:

Passport + proof of entry into Ghana

You do not need a Ghana Card as a visitor.

Always register through official channels — avoid “pre-registered” SIMs, which can cause issues later.

Which mobile networks are available in Ghana?

MTN Ghana

The largest network in Ghana, with wide coverage, data, voice, Mobile Money, and eSIM support.

Telecel Ghana

Formerly Vodafone Ghana. Still a major provider of voice and data services nationwide.

AT Ghana

Previously AirtelTigo. Offers mobile services and eSIM on compatible devices.

Can you get an eSIM in Ghana?

Yes.

eSIMs let you activate mobile data digitally without a physical SIM card. On supported phones, you can use:

  • Your home number (UK/US/Europe)
  • A Ghanaian number

at the same time.

Does MTN Ghana have eSIM?

Yes. MTN supports eSIM via compatible devices and its myMTN app.

Check compatibility by dialling:

*#06#

If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM.

Does AT Ghana have eSIM?

Yes.

AT offers eSIM through customer service centres, where you receive a QR code to activate it. Data bundles and offers vary, so check current pricing before purchase.

What about Telecel eSIM?

Telecel may offer eSIM, but onboarding details can change. Check directly with Telecel or visit a store on arrival for the latest process.

Local SIM vs travel eSIM: which should you choose?

Choose a travel eSIM if:

  • You’re visiting for a short holiday
  • You only need internet (maps, WhatsApp, apps)
  • You want instant connectivity on arrival
  • You don’t need a Ghana number

Choose a Ghana SIM/eSIM if:

  • You’re staying longer
  • You need a local number
  • You’ll make frequent local calls
  • You want cheaper long-term data

Where to get a SIM or eSIM in Ghana

You can get one at:

  • MTN, AT, or Telecel official shops
  • Kotoka International Airport
  • Authorised mobile agents in major towns
  • Airalo (purchase online before travel)
  • Vodafone (purchase online before travel)

Check out our Esim comparison guide for 2026

What you need:

  • Passport
  • Proof of entry into Ghana

For eSIMs, you’ll usually receive a QR code to activate.

Cost (typical ranges):

  • SIM starter packs: low cost or sometimes free with bundles
  • Data bundles: from small daily packs to larger monthly plans
  • eSIMs: similar pricing, data sold separately

Can I keep my normal number?

Yes, if your phone supports dual SIM or eSIM.

You can use:

  • Home SIM for calls/SMS
  • Ghana SIM/eSIM for data

Important: Turn off roaming data to avoid unexpected charges.

Before you travel

  • Ensure your phone is unlocked
  • Check eSIM compatibility (*#06#)
  • Download apps (WhatsApp, Maps, Bolt, Yango)
  • Save offline maps of Ghana
  • Keep your passport accessible

Don’t buy pre-registered SIMs

Avoid SIMs registered under someone else’s identity. Always register your own SIM at an official outlet.

Which network is best?

Coverage varies by location. MTN is generally the most widely available, but performance can differ between cities and rural areas. Many frequent travellers use dual SIMs for flexibility.

What does viewGhana recommend?

For short trips, a travel eSIM is the easiest option — set it up before you fly and connect on arrival.

For longer stays, a local Ghana SIM or eSIM gives better value and a local number.

The best choice depends on how long you’re staying and how you use data — not just the network itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do tourists need a Ghana Card to buy a SIM?

No. Passport and proof of entry are sufficient for visitors under current NCA guidance.

Can tourists use eSIM in Ghana?

Yes. MTN and AT support eSIM, and international eSIM providers also work.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Dial *#06# and check for an EID number.

Can I buy a SIM at Accra airport?

Yes, from official network counters or authorised vendors.

Will WhatsApp still work with my number?

Yes. Your WhatsApp account remains linked to your original number unless you change it.

Will my UK phone work in Ghana?

Most unlocked smartphones will work, but always confirm before travel.

Do I need a Ghana SIM for Bolt or Yango?

Not necessarily, but a local number can make driver communication easier.

Staying connected in Ghana

For most visitors, staying connected is simple once you choose the right option.

  • Travel eSIM = easiest for short stays
  • Local SIM/eSIM = best for longer visits

Just register properly, avoid unofficial SIMs, and manage roaming settings.

Now you can focus on your trip and not your signal.
