Where to find cheap or affordable flights to Ghana for December?

Going on holiday to Ghana should not fill you with dread. The usually cries of ‘”Oh the flights are expensive or Chale why is British Airways always charging so much”. Does not need to be way as there are always ways to find affordable flights to Ghana, it all comes down to a little patience and creativity to your approach.

Finding cheap flights to Ghana can be difficult but it’s not impossible. We recommend using websites like Skyscanner to check the Airlines that fly to Ghana on a regular basis. Once you have this there are several options open to you. First you have to decide if you want to fly direct or have a stop over. The most affordable flights to Ghana which are always reasonable priced are with Airlines like Klm. Air France and Brussels. They have one stop over in their home countries then offer a direct flight to Accra. These are great options when travelling from Europe or the UK. Another tip we can advise is flying to neighbouring countries, in the past we have found that flying to Lagos then taking an internal flight to Ghana has worked out cheaper than doing long stop overs. You have to be quick though this trick is starting to catch on. This option usually relies on some careful planning on flight times. As you will need to book a return to Lagos which is in line with your returning flight to your home country. Also note that there are different terminals in Lagos for domestic flights so be mindful of the travelling distance. The viewGhana Team have done this before but it takes planning.

In all this option can shave about £300 to £500 off your flight and if you have a Ghana passport there is no need for visa to Nigeria as its an Ecowas country.

By far the cheapest month to fly to Ghana at the moment is any month that is not a school holiday. So February, May, June, September and early October are probably the cheapest times to fly to Ghana. The other months or seasons to avoid or be prepared to dig deep for are Easter, Summer and December. With December in Ghana which is now on official name for season holiday on Ghana the flight prices usually start going up from mid November. As the pilgrimage to Ghana for December starts with organisers taking up camp before the holiday makers.

Finding a cheap flight to Ghana in December is not impossible if you have left it late then the options open to you are stop over flights. TAP Airlines is an option but be warned they have a tendency to delay or cancel. The viewGhana Team were unfortunate to get caught up on a classic TAP airlines cancelled flight situation in 2022 and spent 10hrs waiting for connecting flight in Lisbon back to London. However, that was then they assure us they have made improvements. The other alternative is via Turkey on Turkish airline or the Middle East with Emirates or Qatar Airways. The stopovers are a little longer but the flight prices are a lot less. With the long stop overs we recommend looking at these as being a short stay in another country like a quick city break. If you are able to leave the airport and come back it’s worth it.

The best advise anyone will give when booking flights to Ghana in December is to book early. We recommend booking at least a year in advance if you know you are going. If you are booking with a travel agent some allow you to place a deposit. Whilst some Airlines allow you to book with the option of getting a full refund if you cancel or change your mind. January flight sales are also a great window to book your flights to Ghana. So don’t leave or late next time.

A reasonable travel time to get to Ghana is relative. Direct flights from London with British Airways have set the bench mark of 6hrs and from the USA east coast 10 hrs and West coast up to 13 hrs. So with these numbers in mind the average with a quick stop over you should expect to add 1 to 2 hours more on your travel time. If however, it’s a longer stop over be prepared to add 5 to 6 hours. Please note the stop overs are time you will spend on the ground.
