Updated: July 2026
If you are planning to travel from Canada to Ghana in 2026, you may have seen articles, official announcements or social media posts stating that Air Transat is launching direct flights between Toronto and Accra.
However, that information is now out of date.
In March 2026, Air Transat confirmed that the launch of its planned non-stop Toronto to Accra route had been postponed. The service was removed from the airline’s summer 2026 schedule, and no replacement launch date has yet been announced.
At the time of writing, there is therefore no scheduled direct passenger flight between Canada and Ghana.
viewGhana has published this update because many of the original announcements are still appearing in Google search results, on travel websites and across social media. Some official pages also continue to display the original launch information. Travellers should be careful not to make plans based on posts published before the March 2026 postponement.
What was originally announced?
Air Transat first announced the new Toronto to Accra route in November 2025.
The seasonal service was expected to operate from 17 June to 22 October 2026, with two non-stop flights each week on Wednesdays and Sundays. It would have become the first scheduled non-stop passenger connection between Canada and Ghana.
The announcement created considerable interest among Ghanaian communities in Canada, particularly those living in Toronto and the wider Greater Toronto Area.
A direct flight would have made it easier for people travelling to Ghana for family visits, holidays, business, festivals and the busy December season.
However, the planned flights did not begin on 17 June 2026.
What changed in March 2026?
During March 2026, the Toronto to Accra service disappeared from Air Transat’s published summer flight schedule.
Air Transat subsequently confirmed that the route had been postponed because it was reassessing the launch timeline due to operational and commercial considerations. The airline said it wanted to ensure that any eventual service met its standards and customer expectations.
The airline used the word postponed, rather than cancelled. We are yet to get an update from Air Tansat if there is going to be a new launch date or of the route is not longer going ahead at time of writing. If users are do a search for Air Transat to Accra they will come to their Air Transat Accra promotion pages which does not show or allow bookings to Accra.
This means Air Transat could still launch the route at a later date. However, it has not confirmed when that might happen, and travellers should not assume that the service will begin later in 2026.
Is there currently a direct flight from Toronto to Accra?
No.
As of July 2026, there is no scheduled non-stop passenger service operating between Toronto Pearson International Airport and Kotoka International Airport (Now called Accra International Airport) in Accra.
Older articles may still state that direct flights are available because they were written after the original November 2025 announcement and before the route was postponed in March 2026.
Some of these pages may show the original dates, flight frequency and proposed timetable without making it clear that the service was subsequently removed from the schedule.
Before booking, travellers should always check the airline’s current booking system rather than relying only on an older news article, social media post or promotional graphic.
Can you still fly from Canada to Ghana?
Yes.
Travelling from Canada to Ghana remains possible, but passengers will currently need to make at least one connection.
Depending on the airline and departure city, common connecting routes may take travellers through international hubs such as:
- London
- Amsterdam
- Paris
- Brussels
- Lisbon
- Casablanca
- New York
- Addis Ababa
The best route will depend on your Canadian departure airport, travel dates, ticket price, baggage allowance and the length of the connection.
Travellers departing from Toronto will generally have the widest choice of one-stop options. Those travelling from cities such as Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver may need an additional domestic or international connection.
When comparing flights, look beyond the headline ticket price. A cheaper journey may include a long overnight connection, an airport change or more restrictive baggage rules.
What should travellers do if they thought they had booked the direct flight?
Anyone who previously reserved or attempted to reserve travel on the proposed Air Transat route should check their booking directly with Air Transat or the travel agent that issued the ticket.
Do not rely solely on the original confirmation email or information contained in an old itinerary.
Confirm:
- Whether the booking is still active
- Whether the flight has been replaced by an alternative route
- Whether a refund or travel credit has been issued
- Whether any new journey includes a connection
- Whether the departure or arrival time has changed
- Whether baggage remains included throughout the journey
If your booking was made through a third-party website, contact both the booking provider and the operating airline.
Planning a trip to Ghana from Canada in 2026
The absence of a direct flight should not prevent you from visiting Ghana, but it makes careful planning more important.
Compare the full journey
A one-stop flight with a sensible connection may be easier than a cheaper itinerary involving two connections or a long overnight wait.
Check the complete journey time, not just the duration of each individual flight.
Check baggage allowances
People visiting family in Ghana often travel with more luggage than the average holiday passenger.
Baggage allowances can vary considerably between airlines and ticket types. A lower fare may become more expensive once checked luggage is added.
Also check whether your bags will be transferred automatically at the connecting airport or whether you will need to collect and recheck them.
Leave enough connection time
Avoid connections that leave very little time to pass through security, immigration or a different terminal.
A slightly longer connection can offer valuable protection if the first flight is delayed.
Check transit requirements
Depending on your passport, route and connecting country, you may require a transit visa or other travel documentation even if you do not leave the airport.
Always check the entry and transit rules that apply to your nationality before booking.
Book early for December travel
Flights to Ghana become particularly busy around Christmas, New Year and the December in Ghana event season.
Travellers planning to visit during December should begin comparing flights and accommodation early. Waiting for the possibility of a direct Air Transat route could leave you with fewer choices and higher prices.
Until a new launch date is officially confirmed, it is safer to plan on the basis that a connection will be required.
Why a direct Canada to Ghana flight still matters
The proposed route attracted so much interest because a direct connection would offer clear benefits to travellers and to both countries.
It could:
- Reduce overall journey times
- Make family visits more convenient
- Support tourism between Ghana and Canada
- Improve access for older passengers and families with young children
- Strengthen business and investment links
- Encourage more visitors to attend Ghanaian festivals and cultural events
- Support travel during the busy Christmas and December season
It would also give Ghanaian and wider African diaspora communities in Canada a simpler way to travel to Accra without connecting through Europe, the United States or another African country.
For these reasons, the route remains commercially and culturally significant even though its 2026 launch has been postponed.
