Accra After Dark: The Best Things to Do in Accra at Night

Accra doesn’t wind down when the sun sets. In many parts of the city, that’s when things really start.

You can watch the sunset from a rooftop, have dinner somewhere special, listen to live Highlife and jazz, explore Accra with a local guide, spend the evening around Osu or keep going until sunrise in one of the city’s nightclubs.

So, if you’re wondering what to do in Accra at night, here are some of our favourite ways to experience the city after dark.

1. Start with rooftop drinks

There’s something about seeing Accra from above as the city lights start coming on.

Skybar 25, at Villaggio Vista near Airport Residential, is one of Accra’s best-known rooftop experiences. Come around sunset for drinks and stay as the city changes from day to night.

Luna Rooftop Bar is another option if you want to combine rooftop drinks with dinner.

Best for: Sunset drinks, couples and first-time visitors.

2. Book an Accra night experience

If you’re new to Ghana, you don’t necessarily have to figure out Accra after dark by yourself.

There are bookable evening experiences covering everything from local food and nightlife to guided tours that introduce visitors to different parts of the city.

This can be particularly useful if you’re travelling solo, visiting Accra for the first time or only have a few evenings in the city.

3. Have a proper Accra date night

Not every evening needs loud music and a dance floor.

For something more relaxed, Bistro 22 in Labone is a good option for dinner and conversation, while Skybar 25 adds rooftop views if you’re trying to make the evening feel a little more special.

East Legon also has plenty of restaurants and lounges where dinner can easily turn into drinks.

And a date doesn’t have to mean an expensive restaurant. Grab some kelewele or suya, take a drive through the city and find somewhere to sit with a drink.

Sometimes simply being out in Accra is the date.

Best for: Couples and chilled evenings.

4. Spend an evening at +233 Jazz Bar & Grill

For live music in Accra, +233 Jazz Bar & Grill in North Ridge should be high on your list.

It’s one of Accra’s established live-music venues, with performances ranging from jazz and Highlife to other African sounds.

The setting is much more relaxed than a nightclub. Get a table, order something from the grill, have a drink and enjoy the music.

It’s particularly good if you want to experience Accra at night but aren’t interested in clubs.

Best for: Live jazz, Highlife, couples and music lovers.

5. Spend the evening in Osu

If it’s your first time experiencing Accra after dark, Osu is one of the easiest places to start.

You don’t need to decide on one venue for the whole evening.

Try Alley Bar for something stylish and tucked away, or Republic Bar & Grill, a relatively small venue where the atmosphere can spill out onto the street when the night gets going.

Later, Purple Pub offers something considerably more casual if you want a lively local experience rather than a polished lounge.

That’s part of the appeal of Osu. Start with food, have a few drinks and decide where the night takes you.

Best for: First-time visitors, groups and bar hopping.

6. Explore East Legon after dark

East Legon offers a different type of night out.

The neighbourhood is packed with restaurants, lounges and fashionable hangouts and attracts a younger crowd.

Exhale Lounge is one option if you’re looking for drinks, music and more of a lounge atmosphere.

The important thing to understand is the geography.

East Legon is spread out. Don’t expect to walk casually between every venue just because they’re all described as being in East Legon. A car or ride-hailing service will usually be the practical way to move around.

Best for: Restaurants, lounges, groups and a fashionable Accra night out.

7. Find a bar or lounge to match your mood

Accra has no shortage of bars, but they offer very different experiences.

For rooftop drinks: Skybar 25 or Luna Rooftop Bar.

For Osu: Republic Bar & Grill, Alley Bar or the much more casual Purple Pub.

For something chilled: Zen Garden offers food, drinks and a relaxed garden setting.

For more live music: Try The Piano Bar, which regularly features live performances and jazz musicians.

For East Legon: Exhale Lounge gives you a more traditional lounge-style evening.

For something more exclusive: Front/Back is one of Accra’s creative social spaces, but check the current access arrangements before heading there.

8. Experience a real Accra nightclub

If you’re ready to dance, now we’re talking about something different.

One thing we always point out on viewGhana is that bars, lounges and nightclubs aren’t the same thing.

Accra’s genuine nightclubs open late and some keep going until the early hours.

Twist in Labone is one of the city’s established names and remains popular with Ghanaians and international visitors.

Other options include Enzo Accra Club Rave Accra, MAD Club, Ace Night Club and Kruna.CLub

Expect a mixture of Afrobeats, Hip-Hop, Amapiano and Ghanaian favourites depending on the venue and night.

And don’t arrive too early. Accra clubbing operates on Accra time. The serious part of the night may only be starting when some overseas visitors are thinking about going home.

Best for: Dancing and very late nights.

9. Make it a beach-club night

Why spend the whole night indoors when you’re in a coastal city?

Sandbox Beach Club combines a beach setting with drinks, DJs and events and offers a different experience from Accra’s conventional bars and clubs.

Check what’s happening before you go. A beach club can feel completely different on a normal evening compared with a major event night.

Best for: Groups, DJs and a destination-style evening.

10. Eat late

Eventually, all those cocktails and dancing catch up with you.

Fortunately, eating is part of the Accra night-out experience.

Depending on where you are, that might mean finding a late restaurant or simply getting grilled meat, shawarma, kelewele or suya.

And sometimes the best recommendation comes at 1am.

Ask the people around you where they’re going to eat next and you may discover somewhere that wasn’t on your itinerary at all.

What time does nightlife start in Accra?

This catches some first-time visitors out.

Dinner might start around 7pm or 8pm. Bars and lounges become busier later in the evening, while some nightclubs don’t really get going until after 11pm or midnight.

Friday and Saturday are naturally popular, but Accra has things happening throughout the week.

Getting around Accra at night

Don’t plan your night by looking at a list of venues without considering where they actually are.

Osu, Labone and Cantonments can work naturally together.

Airport Residential is useful for hotels, restaurants and rooftop options.

North Ridge is where you’ll find +233 Jazz Bar & Grill.

East Legon has a huge choice of restaurants and lounges but is further from some of the central nightlife areas and more spread out.

Traffic can make seemingly short distances take longer than expected.

Ride-hailing apps are generally the easiest option for visitors moving between venues. And if you’re drinking, don’t drive.

For your first night in Ghana: Sunset drinks followed by dinner or an organised night experience.

For serious clubbing: Head out later and prepare for a late finish.

For something organised: Book an Accra night tour, food experience or nightlife experience.
