Learn more about the Greater Accra Region

Accra is not only the gateway to Ghana but also one of the most vibrant cities in the country. The Greater Accra Region is the most densely populated administrative region, home to the major metropolitan areas of Accra and Tema. Together, these cities form Ghana’s industrial and commercial hubs. Accra is known for its business activities, while Tema, with its vital shipping ports, offers crucial access to global trade. Both cities are served by Kotoka International Airport, located about 12 km from the centre of Accra.

How long has Accra been Ghana’s capital city?

Accra became the capital of Ghana in 1877, following the second Anglo-Asante War, — a conflict between the British and the Ashantis. Before that, Cape Coast was the capital. Interestingly, one reason for relocating the capital was that Accra had a drier climate compared to Cape Coast, which made it more favorable for settlement.

What is Accra like today

Today, Accra is a dynamic city blending modernity and tradition. The city has evolved from a 19th-century suburb of Victoriasborg into a bustling metropolis. Stretching along the Atlantic coast, Accra offers a vibrant mix of cultures and lifestyles. The city attracts a diverse population, drawn by its multicultural vibe and the energy of a modern West African hub. From the lively markets in Madina to the luxurious, tree-lined villas in Cantonments, Accra offers a bit of everything.

Accra is home to a rich variety of attractions, including museums, public monuments, high-rise office buildings, and even beautiful beaches. It’s often described as the modern-day “Wakanda” (from Marvel’s Black Panther), a fictional African country that represents African innovation and culture.

Where the Greater Accra Region is located in Ghana

The Greater Accra Region is located in the southeastern part of Ghana, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the south. It is the political and economic hub of the country, with Accra as the capital city.

Tema: The Growing Extension of Accra

Once a new town, Tema is now an extension of Accra, situated 30 km from the city center. Tema is Ghana’s primary commercial port and has grown into a significant residential area for those working in Accra. The city is divided into 20 communities, with Spintex Road being the main connection between Tema and Accra. Traffic can be heavy, so using Google Maps can be helpful to navigate the area, but keep in mind that an all-terrain vehicle may be needed for occasional detours.

Beaches in the Greater Accra area and beyond

The beaches of the Atlantic coast are popular for Accra residents and those visiting the country . Labadi Pleasure Beach and Kokrobite Beach, just 25km west of Accra, are particularly popular at weekends.  If you want somewhere a little quieter then you should try Bojo beach. If you want some time out of Accra then travel further along the coast is Ada and the estuary of the great River Volta. Here the fine beaches of the estuary and the Atlantic coast provide popular resort areas. Watersports and river trips make this a great place to relax, while the waters off the coast teem with game fish.
